What I believe Tolstoy is saying those who do things to help others are the ones who are more likely to succeed in and prosper. Another thought this makes me think is that those who are bad as in criminals are the ones who will never enjoy freedom thus they don't truly live. Freedom is the very idea of living and those who do good are the one who will have freedom and those who do bad are the ones who will not live or prosper.  Doing good is the key to one of the many gates of freedom, prosperity, and success.
